Sir James Gowans and the Pagoda

Douglas May FRPS

In 1965, at the age of 19, I organised an unsuccessful attempt to save the Pagoda theexotic house of 19th century Edinburgh architect, Sir James Gowans.

Around Edinburgh and West Lothian examples of Gowans’s work remain, are lived in and contribute to the Victorian aspect of Edinburgh’s architectural heritage.

My photographic project is designed to photograph his work as it lives on today and capture the essence of my youthful campaign.
